Canadian Society of Animal Science Fellowship *

Awarded to CSAS members for truly outstanding contributions in any field of animal agriculture. Selection is made by the Awards and Honours Committee from nominations by the membership. The award consists of a plaque and a cheque; ♦ sponsor 2013 Alltech Canada, Inc. $1000 ♦ awarded to Dr. Karen Wittenberg, University of Manitoba.

Excellence in Nutrition and Meat Sciences *

Awarded to CSAS members to encourage excellence in teaching, research or extension in the fields of nutrition and meat science at the provincial, federal or international level. Nominees previously awarded AIC or Canadian Society of Animal Science Fellowships are not eligible for this award, but the converse does not apply. Selection of recipients is made by the Awards and Honours Committee from nominations received. The award consists of a plaque and a cheque;  ♦ sponsor 2013 Nutreco $1000 ♦ awarded to Dr. Martin Nyachoti, University of Manitoba.

Technical Innovation in Enhancing Production of Safe Affordable Food *

This award recognizes excellence in technical innovation and teaching with particular emphasis in the fields of biotechnology, genetics, physiology and animal behavior. The award requires a demonstration that the recipient had contributed to the production of safe and affordable food. CSAS and AIC fellowship recipients are ineligible. The award consists of a plaque and a cheque; ♦ sponsor 2013 Elanco Animal Health/Eli Lilly Canada Inc. $1000 ♦ awarded to Dr. Leluo Guan, University of Alberta.

Canadian Animal Industries Award in Extension and Public Service *

Awarded to CSAS members to recognise outstanding service to the animal industries of Canada in technology transfer, leadership and education in animal production. The recipient of the award may be employed in any sector of the Canadian animal industry. The contribution to advancement of education and technology transfer in animal agriculture in Canada must have been outstanding and sustained over time. The contributions must be distinct from those of research. Selection of recipients is made by the Awards and Honours Committee from nominations received. The award  consists of a plaque and a cheque;  ♦ sponsor 2013 Canadian Cattlemen's Association, Dairy Farmers of Canada, Canadian Pork Council, and Chicken Farmers of Canada $1000 ♦ awarded to Dr. H.A. (Bart) Lardner, Western Beef Development Centre.

Awards - transitioning scientists

Young Scientist Award *

Awarded to CSAS members in recognition of the achievements of new members of the research community. Individuals who have demonstrated excellence in research in any area of animal and/or poultry science, and who have held their Ph.D. for a period not greater than seven years (or eight years in special cases such as birth of a child or prolonged illness) are eligible. Nominees previously awarded AIC or Canadian Society of Animal Science Fellowships are not eligible for this award, but the converse does not apply. Selection of recipients is made by the Awards and Honours Committee from nominations received. The award consists  of a plaque and a cheque; ♦ sponsor 2013 Zoetis ♦ awarded to Dr. Trevor Alexander, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Lethbridge.

Honorary Life Membership *

Awarded to CSAS members who have retired from active employment and who have been active members for a period of no less than 10 years immediately preceding retirement. The award is intended for members who have truly retired (age 65) and not for those who have retired only to assume another career or appointment. Members are encouraged to identify potential recipients and selection by the Awards and Honours Committee is coningent upon verification by the CSAS membership list.  Honorary Life Members cease to pay membership dues; ♦ sponsor 2013 CSAS ♦ awarded to Dr. Gary Crow, University of Manitoba (retired).

Awards - students

Graduate student travel bursaries

Awarded each year upon confirmation of attendance at the Annual Meeting. Pending for 2013, $500 each to Chinyere Ekine-Dzivenu (University of Alberta), Katie Wood (University of Guelph), Christine Rosser (University of Saskatchewan), Luiene Moura Rocha (Université Laval).

Graduate student poster presentations

In recognition of the top three poster presentations during the Graduate Student Competition at the Annual Meeting. The award consists of a cheque; ♦ sponsor 2013 CSAS ♦ awarded 1st $250, 2nd $150 and 3rd $100 were: Krysty Munns (University of Lethbridge), Curtis Mikel (University of Guelph), Carlos Escobar (University of Alberta).

Graduate student oral presentations

In recognition of the top three oral presentations during the Graduate Student Competition at the Annual Meeting. The award consists of a cheque; ♦ sponsor 2013 Zoetis ♦ awarded 1st $250, 2nd $150 and 3rd $100 were: Brittney Leanne Schurmann (University of Sasktachewan), Cheyenne C. Conrad (University of Lethbridge), Tawnya Renee Ullenboom (University of Manitoba).

Undergraduate student academic achievement

In recognition of superior academic achievement during the first three years of study within each of the Faculties of Agriculture at each Canadian university. This award was created in 2005 to continue the Undergraduate Awards program. The award consists of a cheque, a certificate and a one year membership in CSAS (not including CJAS) ♦ awarded $100 each in 2013 to Alan Robert Makarewicz (University of British Columbia), Kirstie Rissling (University of Saskatchewan), Shane Wood (McGill University), Vanja Djukic (University of Guelph), Elisia Jones (University of Manitoba), Chloé Fortin (Université Laval), Hollyn Maloney (University of Alberta), Elizabeth Baker (Dalhousie University).

Undergraduate student awards theatre or poster presentations

In recognition of the top three theatre or poster poster presentations when sufficient numbers of undergraduate students register for the Annual Conference as presenting authors of their original research. The award consists of a cheque, sponsor 2011 CSAS. No competitors in 2012 or 2013.

◊ CSAS FELLOWSHIP AWARD eligible to a CSAS member who has made an outstanding contribution in any field of animal agriculture.

◊ HONORARY LIFE MEMBERSHIP AWARD eligible to CSAS members who have retired from employment, were members at the time of their retirement, and  had been active members for a total of not less than 15 years prior to retirement.

◊ GRADUATE STUDENT TRAVEL BURSARY eligible to graduate students of Canadian Universities scheduled to present their abstract(s) at the annual conference. Nomination must be submitted by the department chair.

◊ UNDERGRADUATE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARD eligible to an undergraduate student (at each of the 8 Canadian Universities) who has demonstrated superior academic performance during the first three years of related studies and enrolled in the fourth year in animal/poultry science.  

WCAP 2013

Three (3) generous scholarships for young scientists in North America to attend and participate in the 11th World Congress on Animal Production (WCAP2013) to be held in Beijing, China from Oct. 15 - 20, 2013.
